About Mike

As a consultant within the utility industry, Mike Borgstadt helps electric utilities develop projects, plan resources, and assess how they will meet future load requirements — taking into consideration a range of issues, from economics and environmental compliance to fuel diversity and risk.

After graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in mechanical engineering and going on to earn an MBA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Mike started his career as an analyst helping power producers design, permit and construct new generation plants.  He currently leads our talent operations within 1898 & Co. overseeing our strategy and programs regarding recruitment, onboarding, training, and career development.

How Mike helps clients
When Mike thinks about how to help clients, he focuses on ways he can be what he calls their “easy button.” He knows how tough it is to manage a utility and oversee its assets and resources, so he wants his clients to think of him and his team as problem-solvers.

Mike is particularly adept at helping clients navigate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

What motivates Mike
Mike is motivated by the success of his clients. At work, nothing makes him happier than moving a problem toward a solution and seeing everyone’s hard work move from theory to reality.

Even when dealing with complex projects — like a recent engagement helping multiple companies, each with a different objective, come together on a joint project — he brings people together through clear, transparent communication.

Helping clients succeed — and having them come back — helps Mike make the most of every day at work.

A little bit about Mike
For Mike, a good weekend includes hunting or fishing with his dad and his kids. When they are not doing that, he helps coach his kids’ softball and baseball teams.

Fun fact: Mike can sing (not necessarily well) any country song you toss his way. His love for the genre runs deep. He also enjoys Kansas City barbecue: meat from Jack Stack and sauce from Arthur Bryant’s or Gates.
