About Doug

As a senior managing consultant at 1898 & Co., Doug brings an extensive background in the energy and utilities industries to help clients create the grid of the future.

Doug attended the United States Naval Academy, where he studied naval architecture. After several early roles in the power industry, he joined a large multinational consulting company, ultimately rising to become the CTO of their 12,000+ person energy practice. Doug has a multitude of experiences, ranging from running high-growth organizations to working with clients around the world helping them develop long-term strategic plans and implement innovative solutions to some of the industry’s leading challenges. His résumé includes volunteering in Sierra Leone, assisting in a countrywide plan to recover from the civil war.

Doug brings a broad and diverse set of experiences to help with his clients’ most pressing issues. A prolific thought leader, he helps clients think through future demands they are likely to face and develop a practical plan to achieve their goals. He enjoys on new technology and developing innovative methods to help clients in the power industry successfully transition to renewable energy generation at a practical pace.

What motivates Doug
Doug is motivated by the big-picture issues being addressed within the power industry. He enjoys mentoring young engineers by helping them form a basis to start a piece of work and being a resource that they can rely on for any industry-related questions or concerns. Doug’s measure of success is hearing a client tell him they learned something new out of the work he delivered.

A little bit about Doug
Doug is highly active with industry organizations, including providing trainings for IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES) and chairing the IEEE PES Intelligent Grid and Emerging Technologies Coordinating Committee (iGET CC). He was named a top 25 newsmaker by Engineering News-Record (ENR) in 2019, among many other awards over his decades in the industry. He is also the Special Assistant to the Technical Council holding various leadership positions for committees.

When not working across the power industry, he can be found at his home in Detroit, trying out the latest home automation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
